Biomass production and essential oil of lemon balm cultivated under colored screens and nitrogen Horticultura Brasileira
Alves,Aglair C; Jesus,Fábio N; Alves,Péricles B; Santos,Hamilton V; Souza,Girlene S; Santos,Anacleto R.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light quality and nitrogen availability on the biomass production, yield and composition of essential oil of lemon balm (Lippia alba). Five doses of N (0; 40; 80; 120 and 160 kg ha-1) were studied, using urea and three light quality conditions obtained with the use of colored shading nets (blue and red), 50% irradiance and under full sun. The experiment was arranged in a 5x3 factorial scheme, in split plots, with seven replicates. After 60 days of cultivation under the shading nets, a higher dry leaf biomass (4.83 g per plant) was observed in the plants under blue net cultivation at a dose of 102 kg ha-1 of N. The plants grown under full sun presented greater amount of neral and geranial, major...

Colored shade nets induced changes in growth, anatomy and essential oil of Pogostemon cablin Anais da ABC (AABC)
RIBEIRO,AURISLAINE S.; RIBEIRO,MARIANA S.; BERTOLUCCI,SUZAN K.V.; BITTENCOURT,WANDERLEY J.M.; CARVALHO,ALEXANDRE A. DE; TOSTES,WESLEY N.; ALVES,EDUARDO; PINTO,JOSÉ E.B.P..
ABSTRACT The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of colored shade nets on the growth, anatomy and essential oil content, yield and chemical composition of Pogostemon cablin. The plants were cultivated under full sunlight, black, blue and red nets. The harvesting was performed 5 months after planting and it was followed by the analysis of plant growth parameters, leaf anatomy, essential oil content, yield and chemical composition. The plants grown under red net have produced more leaf, shoot, total dry weight and leaf area. Plants cultivated under colored nets showed differences in morphological features. Plants maintained under red net had a higher leaf blade thickness and polar and equatorial diameter of the stomata ratio....

Fluorescence characteristics and photoinhibition in saplings of manwood on clear days and under overcast conditions Scientia Agricola
Dias,Daniela Pereira; Marenco,Ricardo Antonio.
High irradiance may reduce the productivity of tropical plants by exacerbating photoinhibition of photosynthesis, particularly in the case of shade-adapted plants. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cloud cover on the fluorescence characteristics and photoinhibition on saplings of manwood (Minquartia guianensis Aubl.). Three-year-old saplings were exposed to full irradiance either on clear days (10, 45 and 90 min) or under overcast conditions (120, 180, and 420 min). Changes in the population of functional photosystem II (PSII), the initial (Fo) and maximum fluorescences (Fm), and the Fv/Fm ratio (maximum potential quantum yield of PSII) were monitored after plant exposure to full irradiance and during recovery (within 48 h) at low light...

Germination in seed species ingested by opossums: implications for seed dispersal and forest conservation BABT
Cáceres,Nilton Carlos; Monteiro-Filho,Emygdio Leite de Araújo.
Seed germination in plant species consumed by opossums, genus Didelphis, was investigated in southern Brazil, in order to improve knowledge of the strategies of zoochorous plants in the Neotropics. Seeds were obtained from opossum feces. Thirteen of the most frequent species in the diet of local opossums were tested for germination rates and germination responses under different qualities (red/far red ratio) and different intensities of light. Most seeds from feces germinated similarly to the control groups, except for seeds of Rubus rosifolius, which appeared to depend on gut passage. Other experiments revealed that most seeds in the opossums' diet were of pioneer species, with most germination occurring during favorable humid conditions in the rainy...

Growth, photosynthetic pigments and production of essential oil of long-pepper under different light conditions Anais da ABC (AABC)
LIMA,VANDIMILLI A.; PACHECO,FERNANDA V.; AVELAR,RAFAELLA P.; ALVARENGA,IVAN C.A.; PINTO,JOSÉ EDUARDO B.P.; ALVARENGA,AMAURI A. DE.
ABSTRACT Piper hispidinervum C. DC. is popularly known as long-pepper and it owns a commercial value due to the essential oil it produces. Long-pepper oil is rich in safrole and eugenoln components that have insecticidal, fungicidal and bactericidal activity. It has been establish that to medicinal plants light influences not only growth but also essential oil production. The growth, the content of photosynthetic pigments and the essential oil production of Piper hispidinervum at greenhouses with different light conditions was evaluated. The treatments were characterized by cultivation of plants for 180 days under different light conditions, produced by shading greenhouses with 50% and 30% of natural incident irradiance, two colored shading nets red (RN)...

Phytosociology in agricultural areas submitted to distinct wintercropping management Planta Daninha
Concenço,G.; Ceccon,G.; Sereia,R.C.; Correia,I.V.T.; Galon,L.
Studies related to weed dynamics are essential for agricultural sustainability in tropical soils, as their interference can cause significant yield losses, especially in crops with lower competitive ability. This study aimed to assess the composition of weed communities in the third cropping season in areas submitted to distinct wintercroppings for two consecutive years. Evaluations were made in terms of species composition, level of infestation, and severity of occurrence of each weed species in relation to the others within the same area. The wintercropping management systems were: (1) Brachiaria ruziziensis; (2) corn intercropped with B. ruziziensis; (3) corn and (4) cowpea. Plant communities under these wintercrop systems were evaluated in the third...
